The Ellis Ericson Long Kite takes the visionary foundations of the Lite Kite design and stretches them into a longer, more versatile craft. Hand-shaped on Ellis’s Mid North Coast property using his signature hot-wire process, each board starts with a perfectly tuned blank that matches his rocker vision with precision. This approach gives the Long Kite its unmistakable feel, balanced, responsive, and shaped with the kind of sensitivity only a completely hands-on process can achieve.
By extending the Lite Kite’s framework, the Long Kite gains extra paddle power, enhanced glide, and a longer trim line without sacrificing the lively performance the model is known for. The elongated outline unlocks smooth speed through flatter sections while still engaging the rail beautifully thanks to Ellis’s parabolic chine panels, central concave, and subtly elevated rail line. It’s a model that rewards drawn-out lines just as much as tight, controlled turns, coming alive in everything from playful surf to solid, pulsing conditions.
Wanting to go further? Now is your time to pick up a board that allows you to make the next step.
True to Ellis’s experimental approach, the Long Kite integrates his edge-board influence, a domed S-deck for leverage, and a finely tuned multi-fin setup that boosts projection and drive. Whether you're chasing effortless trim or looking for a longer performance craft with unmistakable character, the Long Kite delivers a unique blend of design innovation and pure hand-shaped craftsmanship, a board built to be felt under your feet from the very first wave.
Ellis Ericson is an Australian shaper from Byron Bay (1989). He made a name for himself after a long stay in Indonesia, where he developed a whole range of shapes (single fins, fish, and mid-lengths). Inspired by Australian shapers of the 1970s, such as his father Bruce Ericson, Michael Peterson, and Bob McTavish, Ellis offers alternative designs that perfectly combine tradition and performance.
When he met Andrew Kidman, a director and documentary filmmaker specializing in surfing, they became deeply interested in the work of George Greenough, pioneer of the “Edge” design, a radical concept based on sculpted edges to optimize speed and grip. Originally designed for windsurfing, Ellis was convinced that this concept could be adapted to surfing. This marked the beginning of a long process of research and testing with Kidman, which resulted in a film and a book: On the Edge of a Dream. In them, they document their immersion in the world of Edge boards and trace the project over several years.
Today, Ellis Ericson continues to perfect his Edge boards, which he presents in precise and functional shapes. Each board he designs is conceived as a unique piece, a high-performance and aesthetically pleasing product. His vision of surfing is based on experimentation, respect for his roots, and a constant desire to explore new sensations.
The Long Kite is built as a performance-oriented yet versatile surfboard, perfect for surfers who want extra paddle power, glide, and speed. Its elongated outline makes it ideal for all conditions, from mellow beach breaks to more powerful waves.
The Long Kite is essentially a stretched version of the Lite Kite, offering more length and volume. This provides greater paddle power and stability while retaining the responsive feel, contoured rails, and quad-fin dynamics of the Lite Kite design.
Each Long Kite is hand-shaped and hot-wired by Ellis himself, ensuring a precise rocker, parabolic chine panels, and central concave. This creates a balanced, lively feel that is both stable for paddling and highly responsive on turns.
The Long Kite is suited for intermediate to advanced surfers who want a longer performance board for trim, speed, and maneuverability. Its versatile design makes it great for surfers seeking extra glide without sacrificing control or responsiveness.
