By wave condition:
Depending on the the size and power of the waves you want to surf with you softboard you should choose differently. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Small & Weak Waves (0-3ft)
In this case go for a larger, wider, and more buoyant board between 7’0” - 9’0” to help you stay afloat effortlessly. A high-volume design makes catching softer waves easier, and the best options include foam longboards, funboards, or extra-wide fish shapes.
Moderate Waves (3-5ft)
If you're looking to surf average conditions, mid-sized softboard around 6’0” - 7’0” offer a great balance between stability and maneuverability. Choosing something around 40L to keep control while still ensuring smooth paddling is a great choice.
Steep & Fast Waves (5ft+)
In this case, shorter, high-performance softboards between 5’0” and 6’0” should be the way to go. They allow for sharper turns and more responsive surfing. When surfing bigger waves, volume shouldn't be too high.
