The Big Happy is the solution for older or bigger surfers that value performance. Easiest way to think about it, Britt designed this board for himself being 6’6, 52 years old, and realizing his strength and mobility are not what they used to be…but he still thinks he can rip.

These two friends are big dudes and great surfers aging well. Very well indeed. But don’t talk anything but high performance to these guys. 

Listening to Pet and Britt talking about the CI Big Happy in a shaping room is the most interesting thing to do if thinking of buying this high performance shape designed in a bigger version.

Peter Mel: Who is this made for and why?

Britt Merrick: I made it for someone who dreams of surfing a high performance surfboard. I have people like us in mind, older people who grew up surfing normal thruster shortboards that are not ready to jump to a mid length. They still want something that feels and works as a shortboard but they don’t want to work that hard.

This board was built with the older/bigger guys in mind for whom the normal dimensionality of shortboards has not enough volumen in key areas. The CI Big Happy is that crutch that brings them back to this high performance game. Either because of their body size or age, or because their mobility is not where it once was or wants to be.

Peter Mel: But it doesn’t look like a crutch. What did you do to achieve this?

Britt Merrick: I worked really hard to hide the volume. For guys like myself. I want to pretend that I rip, that my board looks sexy and feels sexy. So I hid the volume, the rails are full in shape but tapered in size, so most of the volume is hidden in the middle of the board. And if you look in the area that stays underneath the chest it has this long flat area in the deck that makes the board full in comparison with the rail. 

Peter Mel: Stock dims go all the way to 7’4” but it still doesn’t feel that big…

Britt Merrick: The thing about hiding all that volume underneath the chest is that it works in conjunction with its low entry rocker. This board has a super low entry rocker. The idea of the flat deck plus the low entry rocker is that it makes it a paddling beast. Because I feel that for bigger/older guys competing in the line up paddling is key. I’m having a harder time competing in the line up in Rincon than I ever had. So I want more volume but I don’t want my board to be piggy.  I wanted to be sexy and easier
