Pukas Surfboards - Magnetic
Full video review of the board at bottom.
Pukas Surf's new performance mid-length twin is here and we are loving it. A groundbreaking surfboard, meticulously crafted through a fusion of innovative concepts from surf enthusiasts passionate about alternative boards and the dynamic essence of NEW SCHOOL surfing.
The Lady Twin has been and still is Pukas' best selling mid-length. With it's narrower outline and channels it is a more technical surfboard to surf when it comes to taking it to the water.
The Magnetic by David Santos.
The Pukas Magnetic was born from the concept of a mid-length that permits the surfer to easily shred on everyday surf. A performance oriented mid-length for any level surfer.
It's a more stretched out mid-length, not a wide/chunky one, as it was designed with performance in mind and to resonate with the contemporary surf culture that embraces a diverse range of styles, including classic, high-performance, alternative, or whatever label one may choose, the MAGNETIC embodies a seamless integration of these elements.
It encapsulates fluidity, inertia with speed, and the characteristics of an everyday board, enhanced by the agility of twin fins, all within a medium-to-long board design.

The Magnetic boasts a smooth outline with minimal curvature and well-connected lines. Its low rocker throughout most of the board, with a slightly more pronounced curve in the tail, delivers a loose and easily maneuverable tail for seamless directional changes.
ABOUT THE CONCAVES
The bottom features a clever combination of concaves and a v-bottom, ensuring clean hydrodynamics when in contact with the water. This concave set up helps with speed, turning and with rail to rail transition. This intricate design contributes to a smooth and efficient ride, enhancing the overall surfing experience.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT SURFBOARD SIZE FOR ME?

Its important to keep in mind that this board has two different approaches. As it is a performance mid-length some might want to surf it as something similar to their shortboard and other are going to look more for that mid-length vibe. If you are looking for more of a shortboard feeling, 6'4" and 6'6" are the most accurate options.
If you're looking for a reactive board with mid-length vides we suggest the 6'8" for surfers that are around 172cm, 7'0" for surfers between 172cm and 180cm and anything over 7'0" for surfers above 180cm.
This is an estimate. Surfboard sizes will also depend on your weight and skill level. If you have doubts about the right surfboard size for you feel free to reach out to our surfboard experts. They will be more than happy to help you find the right fit.
For those who find the Magnetic a little too challenging, Pukas has recently released a wider more "friendly" version for those who might want something a bit more stable.

FCS II FIN SET UP.
If you prefer surfing your boards in FCS II the right fin set for the Magnetic would be the MARK RICHARDS TWIN and the FCS POWER TWIN.
FCS POWER TWIN FEATURES
- Highest area twin set in the FCS range; as a result, can be pushed harder through turns.
- Moderate sweep (rake), full tip and longer base delivers incredible drive and speed.
- Lower depth value maintains manoeuvrability and looseness off the top and through turns.
- Designed in collaboration with Harley Ingleby for use on his asymmetric twin model.
- Twin fin
BOARD TYPES.
MATERIAL. Performance Glass (PG) fins are machine cut from layers of solid fiberglass. These fins are stiff, and are widely used by pro level surfers because the integrity of the flex is maintained under immense force, and in the most extreme of conditions and situations. |

HOW DID THE MAGNETIC 6'4" FEEL, IKER?

"The board was so much fun. Everything from speed to rail to rail transitioning felt amazing. It was like surfing with an everyday shortboard but in longer dims. I chose 6'4" in this case.
The first wave I got, I stood up and when I started carving, the looseness and speed I felt was crazy. Also, in the beginning I thought the board would excel in the smaller waves as it is a mid-length, but after catching some of the bigger sets I instantly felt that the board still reacted great. I did some nice manouvers in those bigger ones. Felt amazing.
If I had to narrow it down I would push this one in between an everyday board and a mid-length, because it's as easy as a shortboard to turn and then it still has that mid-length vibes to it that I really liked".
THE IDEAL CONDITIONS FOR THE PUKAS MAGNETIC
"I personally surfed the board at a point break. Conditions where medium sized waves with quite some strength. Something around overhead high surf. And holy sh**t the board was flying. I think it would work great in smaller, clean surf too. If you are looking for smooth turns in knee to over-head high conditions this one is a no brainer".
WAVE SIZE
From knee to overhead high conditions.

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES OF THE SURFBOARD DID YOU NOTICE RIGHT AWAY?
The standout features I noticed right away were the speed and responsiveness of the board. The transition from turn to turn was incredibly smooth, and the way it handled the wall and the waves felt intuitive and quick, much like a shortboard. The board's design, especially its mid-length dimensions and double concave bottom transitioning to a V at the tail, provided excellent maneuverability and fluidity.
WHO WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS BOARD TO?
I’d recommend this board to surfers who are looking for a versatile mid-length that performs well in both small and bigger waves. It’s perfect for someone who enjoys the glide and stability of a mid-length but still wants the sharp, quick turning ability of a shortboard. Intermediate to advanced surfers would appreciate its performance capabilities, while beginners with some experience might find it a fun way to transition to a more dynamic style of surfing.
ANY ASPECTS OF THE BOARD YOU FELT THAT COULD BE IMPROVED?
The board exceeded my expectations in terms of speed and ease of turning. However, it might take some adjustment for surfers who are used to traditional mid-lengths, as its more responsive nature feels closer to a shortboard.
For surfers who might find this version too unstable or challenging, Pukas has released a wider version of the Magnetic Twin. This alternative is tailored for those with a lower skill level, ensuring they can still enjoy the fun and performance of the board while benefiting from added stability and ease of use. This thoughtful addition makes the design more accessible without compromising on the spirit of the original.
WHICH FINS DID YOU USE? HOW DO THEY FEEL WITH THE BOARDS DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE?
The Pukas Magnetic Twin was paired with the Pukas and Futures collaboration fins, chosen for their ability to enhance the board's speed and maneuverability. These fins provided the right balance of drive and looseness, making it easier to transition between turns and maintain flow on the wave. Their design perfectly complemented the board's mid-length feel while supporting its innovative approach to quick, responsive surfing.
However, it's worth noting that this specific fin set will no longer be available, as Pukas and Axel Lorentz have now parted ways. Since these fins were designed in collaboration with him, they will be phased out. If I were to recommend an alternative, it would be the EN Twin by Futures. This set provides a similar blend of drive and performance, ensuring the board maintains its responsiveness and fun factor.
