The Channel Islands Hoglet is one of the most underrated boards in the CI lineup. Originally inspired by custom orders for extra-short versions of the popular Water Hog, the Hoglet was created to combine the easy wave-catching ability of a mini mal with the responsiveness of a performance shortboard.
Its design is simple but incredibly effective. A wide, full nose provides excellent paddling power and makes catching waves effortless, while the generous rocker throughout the board keeps it surprisingly loose once you're on your feet. Unlike many funboards that feel stiff or difficult to turn, the Hoglet has a refined narrow squash tail that allows it to pivot quickly and draw clean, controlled lines through turns. Channel Islands even describes it as a board that "can turn on a dime."
Wanting to go further? Now is your time to pick up a board that allows you to make the next step.
The board is aimed at surfers who want maximum fun without sacrificing performance. It bridges the gap between a beginner-friendly board and a true shortboard, making it a fantastic option for intermediate surfers progressing from their first fiberglass board. It offers plenty of forgiveness while still encouraging better technique, allowing surfers to improve their bottom turns, trimming, speed generation, and rail-to-rail surfing with confidence.
Although it excels in small, everyday surf thanks to its generous volume and easy paddling, the continuous rocker and rounded outline mean it can also handle steeper, more powerful waves far better than most hybrid or mini mal shapes. It performs well in everything from knee-high beach breaks to overhead point waves, making it an incredibly versatile one-board quiver for surfers who value fun over chasing high-performance equipment.
The Hoglet is best ridden as a thruster and rather than sizing it like a traditional shortboard, most surfers choose it with extra volume, embracing its philosophy as a compact, high-volume board that catches waves easily while remaining playful and surprisingly agile.

The Channel Islands Hoglet surfboard is a high-volume hybrid surfboard that combines the wave-catching ability of a mini mal with the maneuverability of a shortboard. It was designed to help surfers catch more waves while still enjoying responsive, performance-oriented turns.
The Hoglet surfboard is best suited for intermediate surfers progressing from their first fiberglass board, as well as experienced surfers looking for an easy, fun everyday board. It offers a forgiving ride without feeling bulky or difficult to turn.
The Hoglet surfboard performs exceptionally well in knee-high to overhead surf. It excels in everyday beach breaks, point breaks, and softer waves, but its continuous rocker also allows it to handle steeper and more powerful conditions surprisingly well.
The Channel Islands Hoglet surfboard is designed to perform best as a thruster. This setup offers the ideal balance of speed, drive, and control, perfectly matching the board's hybrid design.
For the best performance, pair it with the FCS II CI Upright PC Tri Fin Set. Designed by Channel Islands, these fins feature a more upright template that generates quick acceleration and tighter turns, making them an excellent match for the Hoglet's playful, high-volume outline. They help the board feel lively underfoot without sacrificing control, especially in everyday beach breaks and fun point waves.
If you're looking to pick up a set, you can find the FCS II CI PC L 3-Fin Set at Pukas Surf Shop.
