CHRISTENSON SURFBOARDS | Scarlet Begonia

 “Think about the model, then think about a name that would suit you.” –Chris Christenson to Clovis Donizetti. And this is how it all began. 

The quest for creating a longboard that fitted like a glove with Clovis surfing style, and yet be perfect for longboarding on the French coast, started with an open window to a whole lot of possibilities.

| Scarlet Begonia  A Match Lit Up with Love & Music

Clovis Donizetti designed the Scarlet Begonia alongside Chris Christenson but the name was the first thing Donizetti had no doubts about. Scarlet is the name of her second daughter and one of his favorite colors, so that first half was a given. Her first daughter, Fleur, has already a design with her name so it was only fair to have Scarlet on this adventure. 

Funny enough, Christenson and I would play the song Scarlet Begonias by the Grateful Dead music band, so it all fell into place when deciding the final name for this new design. Something easy going that everybody would feel comfortable with and attached to love, family and rock and roll.

The Scarlet Begonia

Christenson has designed many longboard models for Californian waves so  the start point for this new model was creating something suitable for, not only Donizetti’s style of surfing, but for everyone interested in surfing on the French coast type of waves.

| Following Scarlet Begonia’s Lines

A simple and functional design that would trim, glide and adjust your position from all parts of the board nicely. This one has a narrower nose with a long soft concave. "A wide area towards the middle/ back combined with soft semi refined classic rails ( in the CC landmark style)."

Perfect for the hollower waves that we enjoy on this side of the world. It is a do-it-all longboard. Nose riding and turning become not mutually exclusive.

All this retaining flow and a sense of elegance at all times.

MORE ABOUT Scarlet Begonia

Donizetti exchanged ideas, photos of Christenson boards that he liked, pictures of boards from the 70s that he liked… By the time Donizetti flew to California to build the board together, the first Scarlet Begonia longboard was already built.

“This is it. I shaped it. If you don’t like it, we’ll shape another model with it but if you do like it, this is your model.” –Chris Christenson.

Donizetty was pleased since Christenson got all the ideas and the board was actually there. The big surprise was the cat’s eye stringer (double tapered stringer). The flex it provided was great but we decided to go with the double stringer for the next ones for the waves it was built for. The double stringer will add a bit more strength to the board and will adjust to the demands of the waves. It will allow you to turn the board quickly and make fast changes. The cat’s eye stringer is more suitable for the Californian waves. 

| Clean Surfing, Speed & Precision with a Classic Look

This design suits Donizetty’s style. A flowy and enjoyable longboard that will let you do almost anything you like, very versatile and also beautiful to the eye.

Want to make it sing? Don’t wait to play it yourself.

The board is very well balanced, so it is good for nose riding and for turning and Donizetty has been playing with two designs mostly: 

· The big classic noserider fin that is a little bit like pivot and thick. Nice for smaller waves when you want to emphasize the nose riding. We recommend the Tyler Warren Pivot fin set.

· Fins that will allow you to turn, such as the FCS II Kelia Moniz fin set.

| The Fin that Will Make it Shine

These two fin sets will allow you to play with these two different styles of surfing. A longboard is all about playing with the whole length of the board and the Scarlet Begonia lets you do that. So let it help you play the tune.

Surfboards we hold in stock are ready for inmediate dispatch (24-48h from Monday to Friday) and will arrive at your doorstep in a few days depending on your location. By the way, we ship world wide.

Our Custom Board Builder allows you to customize size, width, thickness, volume, color, logo placement, glassing, fin setup, fin system, finish and overall look. Factory lead times may vary depending on your desired brand, model and surfboard characteristics.

Each board goes through a quality check, is photographed in our studios in Donostia / San Sebastian (Basque Country, Spain) and is handled with care before heading your way.
