The 10’6” Malibu Chip “Le Temps Retrouvé”
Glassing: 1 layer of 10oz Volan and 1 layer of 6oz Volan on top + 1 layer of 10oz Volan on the bottom
Fin: Acacia wood
About this opaque tinted 10’6” Malibu Chip with polish and glass on acacia fin
This is the template Tristan designed with Clovis Donizetti and it’s based on the Matt Kivlin style. Matt was making these boards mainly for Makaha (West Side of Oahu, Hawai) to shoot Hawaii with. The Encyclopedia of Surfing calls Matt Kivlin (1929-2014) “California’s best wave rider in the late 1940s”, a pioneer who popularized the Malibu style – stall, run to the nose, and shoot the curl. Kivlin was not only a vivid surfer, but also a noted shaper, Artist, Craftsman and Builder.
This variation of Malibu Chip features a more pulled in tail which is meant to avoid from tail sliding in a certain size of wave. Think of how Matt was surfing this shape to surf bigger Makaha (Oahu, Hawaii), known at the time as the big wave spot. “The fin is carved out of acacia wood and the half foot fin template is the original fin template of a Velzy Malibu Chip that I surfed in Japan”.
Tristan Mausse’s take on Malibu Chips
During his research on Malibus, Tristan got an authorization from the Biarritz Museum of Ocean where he was granted a pass to study the first surfboard Barland ever made in 1958 in balsa with strong Malibu Chips roots.
He comprehended the connection to the Hull's he's been shaping and mastering for all these years. Tristan came to the conclusion that Malibu Chips and Hulls are the exact same board but 30 years apart in the history of surfing: they are both made for Malibu and they both ask to be surfed in a very similar way.
You got your distinctive style. Assessing the lineup and catching any given wave is now allowing you to surf a wide range of surfboard designs.
Tristan didn’t want to put any Fantastic Acid logo on these limited edition of Malibu Chips and opted for the cut outs of books from french authors that are important to him and his literatura interpretation.
“I love to bring a bit of culture into surfing, and the greatest representation of culture for me is literature. For some others could be music or painting but I thrive on literature”, says Tristan. For this unique Kivlin-style Malibu Chip he chose a cut out from the book Le Temps Retrouvé by Marcel Proust (1871-1922), a French novelist and literary critic.
