The 10'2" Malibu Chip “Ouvres Poétiques”
Glassing: 1 layer of 10oz Volan and 1 layer of 6oz Volan on top + 1 layer of 10oz Volan on the bottom
Fin: Koa wood
About this brown tinted 10’2” Malibu Chip with polish and glass on koa fin
We haven’t seen too many surfboards this beautiful. The uniqueness of the shape, the glass, the polish and the rake and position of the koa wooden fin are freakish. Entirely built in Anglet, France, by Tristan and his skilled hands. A handcrafted surfboard built by the river Adour, in the factory that Tristan owns.
The shape is very neutral. Flat from nose to tail except the last foot that has a little belly entry. And the rails are 50/50 from nose to tail with no edge. However, this unique Malibu Chip is based on Joe Quigg’s Skeleton board he made for a girl back in 1949. They called it Skeleton because the girl, Jane, was studying to be a doctor and her mother painted a Skeleton on her board. Joe Quigg (1925-2021) has been recognized as the “Father of the Modern Surfboard. More on Joe in this link.
This Skeleton-inspired Malibu Chip is very primitive with a very wide tail with parallel rails. Tristan tweaked it a bit to his likings by making the tail a little more narrow to turn it into something more contemporary. For the fin he chose a deeper speed fin to give the board more velocity.
Tristan Mausse’s take on Malibu Chips
The more Tristan learned about Malibu Chips, the more he started to love them. As he sees himself growing as a surfer and shaper, he found interest in trying something new, different and way more minimal than what he's been doing to date.
Getting deeper into it, he also made the connection to the Hull's he's been shaping and mastering for all these years and he came to the conclusion that it actually is the exact same board but 30 years apart in the history of surfing. They are both made for Malibu. They both ask to be surfed in a very similar way. He also started digging into the first surfboards that were brought to Biarritz in 1956 to open European surfing
"I started to really like the minimal. To see the beauty in simplicity and the minimalism of the shape of a Malibu Chip. Everything is just simple and neutral. And that's what actually makes those designs so special. They provide super characteristic surfing with the most neutral shape". - Tristan Mausse.
You got your distinctive style. Assessing the lineup and catching any given wave is now allowing you to surf a wide range of surfboard designs.
“Oeuvres Poétiques” it is an extract from a book of the creator of Phèdre, a French dramatic tragedy in five acts written in alexandrine verse by Jean Racine, first performed in 1677.
